Fashion’s Punk Prom: Met Gala 2013

I was super hyped for the Met Gala last night, especially since the theme, PUNK: Chaos to Couture, was tied to music. The Gala for The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute is followed by an exhibit that runs through the summer. As anxious as I am to get to the Met and see the recreated CBGB bathroom for myself, we have to discuss last night’s fashion first.

AnnaSidenote: Anna wore a pink floral dress. For Spring? Groundbreaking.

It was clear via the live-streamed red carpet and the lovely photos on Style.com, that few gala attendees understood punk, be it the clothes or the music. The highlight of the red carpet was Andrew Bevan of Teen Vogue correcting Hailee Steinfeld after she was asked who her favorite punk artist is saying, “Avril Lavigne is not punk!”

For a brief schooling on punk music, check out the Spotify playlist at the bottom of this post. Listen and look at my top punk-inspired picks from the gala:

I’d give Tommy and Dee punk prom king and queen, hands down. Madonna, Miley, Sarah Jessica Parker and Linda Fargo really committed to the theme, so I loved that. Vivienne Westwood had the most punk accessory of them all: a pinned headshot of Bradley Manning on her lapel. Sienna Miller and Cara Delevingne were stunning and perfect in Burberry. They had just the right balance of past and present for the gala.

Oh, and in case you were wondering, this is what real punks look like:
